How is a phobia different from regular fear?

Phobias are a relatively common affliction, up to 11% of the Australian population  suffers from mild to moderate phobias. Common phobias include fear of flying (Pteromerhanophobia), dogs (cynophobia), spiders (arachnophobia), snakes (ophidiophobia), thunder (astraphobia), heights (acrophobia), invasive medical procedures (tomophobia), and particular social situations such as public speaking or intimacy. Clinically, phobias are different from regular fears or anxieties in that the person exhibits a response to the thing or situation that is way out of proportion to how a regular person would react. These dramatic responses include but are not limited to panic attacks, breathing difficulties, shaking or trembling, elevated heart rate, dizziness, nausea, paralysis and so on.

Phobias can be divided into simple and complex forms. The simple forms are treated by a symptom-oriented therapy. The complex (learned) phobias occur when there has been a negative experience beforehand. These experiences often occur in early childhood age and can be treated in hypnotic trance. Furthermore, phobias can also occur as a defence mechanism for some other underlying problem. In these cases, hypnotherapy has proven to be effective.

If you’re currently living with a phobia and have tried other methods to deal with this issue without getting any real results, then hypnotherapy may be an option for you.
